Shirley Ann Berg

May 6, 1929 — January 30, 2024

Brandon, SD formerly Mayville, ND

Shirley Hatfield Berg, 94, a longtime resident of Mayville, ND, died Tuesday, January 30, 2024 at Bethany Meadows in Brandon, SD.

Shirley was born May 6, 1929, in Reynolds, ND to Charles and Golda (Howard) Hatfield. The family later moved to a farm near Caledonia, ND where she grew up and graduated from high school. She liked to laughingly share that she graduated in the top 3 of her class of 3. She went on to earn her standard degree in education from Mayville State Teachers College where she met Jerome. After Shirley taught in Grand Forks for two years, they were married on August 26, 1951. They lived and taught in Finley, ND and Fertile, MN.  In 1956 they moved to the west side of Mayville, ND, where they raised their four children in a community they truly cherished. She returned to Mayville State and earned her bachelor’s degree. Jerome and Shirley owned and operated the Dairy Queen for ten years with lifetime friends Harvey and Rusty McMullen. They loved to take trips to warmer climates during cold ND winters and enjoyed a trip abroad together. Jerome passed away in 2011 after 59 years of marriage.

Shirley was very active in the community and church.  She loved her Mary Circle, working in the Rainbow Garden and supporting Mayville State. She was a longtime member of PEO and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

She liked to have fun. Shirley loved dancing, playing bridge with friends, having coffee or a cocktail around great conversation, reading good books and puttering in her gorgeous perennial garden. She had a knack for showing up with food and comfort when there was a need. She had trusted friends of all ages. Shirley laughed easily and was known for her incredible wit.  She adored her family and was so proud of everyone. Her whole family fondly remembers her hosting incredible holidays, her awesome cooking, and her grandkids would describe her brownies as legendary.

Left to mourn her passing are her children: Nancy (Bob) Zimney, Debbie (Jerry) Soholt, David (Jackie) Berg and Kari Berg; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and her brother: Dale Hatfield.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Jerome; parents; and brothers Charles, Merle, Maurice and Don.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to The Jerome & Shirley Berg Scholarship fund at Mayville State University or Mayville Lutheran Church.

Visitation:  Will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
