Roma Oline Beck, 98, of Mayville, ND passed away peacefully Friday, July 4, 2025.

Roma was born on February 1 1, 1927, to Emil and Gunda (Lanager) Dakken in Mayville, ND. She graduated from Mayville High School where she was a tumbler and active in school events. After graduating high school, she attended Mayville State Teaching College for one year. She worked as a bookkeeper for several years at Hanson Transport in Mayville, ND.

Roma married Joseph Beck on December 12. 1959 in Moorhead, MN. It was supposed to be a secret ceremony, but family members found out and lovingly surprised them by showing up. In 1961, Roma and Joe moved to Portland, ND where they raised their family. She worked as the bookkeeper for the family businesses, Beck Service and Beck Oil for over 35 years. She returned to Mayville in 2001. She became a resident of Luther Memorial Home in 2017.

Roma was an accomplished bowler for decades, earning her numerous trophies. She was a passionate and competitive card player who loved hosting card parties and regularly gathering with friends. She enjoyed puzzles and always seemed to have a puzzle out on the table. Roma loved to dance — especially to polka music — and was known to dance with anyone, anywhere or even by herself. In her middle years, she participated in community plays. A skilled seamstress, she made clothing for her children, grandchildren, friends, neighbors and lovingly crafted baby blankets for her children and grandchildren.

Deeply involved in her community, Roma was active in the church, VFW Auxiliary and the American Legion. She was a charter member of the VFW Auxiliary. Her hard work and dedication earned her the position of ND State VFW Auxiliary President in 1971-72 which she was extremely proud of.

Roma will be remembered for her kindness, humor and generosity. She had a quick witty sense of humor and a heart always ready to help family, friends and anyone in need. She was funny, loving and fiercely caring — truly a blessing to all who knew her.

She is survived by her three children: David Dakken of Mayville, ND, Deborah Beck of Grand Forks, ND, Rick (Joni) Beck of Edmond, OK; eight grandchildren: Rachel, Julia, Audrey, Emily, Michael, Alex, Mitchell and Aaron; and five great- grandchildren - Corbin, Charlee, Lydia, Camden and Dylan. She is survived by three sisters-in-law.

Roma was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Joe, seven siblings, and several brothers and sisters-in-law.

The family would like to express a special thank you to all the staff at Luther Memorial Home for the compassionate care and dignity they gave Roma while she resided there. Blessed be the memory of Roma Beck.
