Rick Donavan Schmitz

Rick passed away Thursday October 30, 2025 at his home in Fargo, ND.

Born in Grand Forks, ND on September 28, 1965 to Charles and Janis (Wennerstrom) Schmitz. Rick was raised on a farm east of Hope, ND along with his parents and four siblings helping with farm chores. He spent his time riding motorcycles on the farm and working on old cars. Graduated from Hope High School in May 1983 where he participated in Football and Track. He was also a member of the 1981 ND 9-Man Football State Championship team.

After high school Rick enrolled at Moorhead Tech getting a degree as an Electronic Technician. Rick worked for many years at MJ Dalsin Roofing in Fargo as the crew foreman where he traveled all over the Tri-State area for work.

Rick is remembered for his strength training to build muscle and riding his bike around Fargo. Rick's declining health forced him to retire earlier than he wanted. Rick found an abandoned cat at his Uncle Stub's farm and named him Buddy. A good fit until Buddy's passing a few years ago. Rick had a kind heart for people and animals. Always willing to help someone in need.

Rick is survived by siblings: Tarra (Ken) Ihry, Rogers, MN, Jack (Michele) Schmitz, Clifford, ND and Tracey Beckman, Portland, ND; sister-in-law: Jody Schmitz, Fargo, ND; nieces and nephews: Craig (Amanda) & Michaela Ihry, Kyle (Kelly) Kadence & Kai Ihry, Dustin (Keely) Reagan & Beckett Ihry, Sarah (Nick) Quincy & Oaklynn Wilson, Hope (Jacob) & River Roesler, Molly (Andrew) & Eleanor Plutowski, Haley (Daniel) Iyla & Ivy Landman, Cari Schmitz (Brett) & Bryar Peterson; uncle: Dick Klemetson, Plainfield, IL.

Rick was preceded in death by his parents: Chuck & Janis; brother: Robert (Bob); grandparents: Albert & Jenny Schmitz and Victor & Louise Wennerstrom.

Visitation: Will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

Funeral Service: 10:30 AM Tuesday, November 4, 2025 at St. Agatha’s Catholic Church in Hope, ND.

Burial: Will be in the Hope Cemetery in Hope, ND.
