Norman R. Grindeland

May 17, 1922 — February 13, 2020

Norman Grindeland, 97, went to be with the Lord on February 13, 2020 at Luther Memorial Home in Mayville, ND.

Norman was born to Martin and Marie (Paulson) Grindeland on Norway’s Constitution Day, May 17, 1922 at the family farm near Mayville. Although he spoke Norwegian at home, he went to a one-room country school where he learned to speak English in the first grade. He grew up on the farm and began taking over the farming operation during high school. On October 23, 1945 he married his sweetheart, Anna (Menke) Grindeland. They farmed together southeast of Mayville and celebrated 69 wedding anniversaries.
While they were farming, Norman and Anna never golfed; however, after they retired from farming, they became avid golfers. They golfed several times a week during the summer months for twenty years. During the winter months, Norman developed a passion for wood carving. He carved what he observed: many animals and birds; groups of golfers, baseball players and clowns; and busts of Native Americans, pioneers and politicians. His work was displayed in public galleries and his Christmas decorations hung on the North Dakota State Christmas Tree.

Norman was a life-long member of Gran Lutheran Church where he was baptized and confirmed. He enjoyed the fellowship of several generations of parishioners. As a testament to his Christian faith, he carved pocket crosses. He and Anna gave these crosses to friends and acquaintances along with the message of salvation.

Grandpa Norman will be remembered by his family as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was a kind and patient grandpa with a great sense of humor. He shared his insights about life and all of its manifestations while working or playing with his grandchildren. He was intelligent, witty, insightful and humble.
Norman enjoyed a variety of activities. He and Anna had a large garden with many fruits and vegetables. He enjoyed many games. He was very talented at throwing ringers in horse shoes. He liked to play table tennis and billiards. He and Anna played card games like whist and pinochle with many friends and relatives. He cherished the opportunity to watch his grandchildren play sports like baseball, soccer, hockey and table tennis. Whatever he was doing, he liked to see those around him laugh and smile.

Norman is survived by his son: Martin (Sveta) Grindeland, Fargo, ND; grandchildren: James (Thea) Grindeland, Athens, GA; John (Katie) Grindeland, St. Anthony, MN; Sergei (Ashley) Shkalikov, Moorhead, MN; great grandchildren: Estelle, Isabelle, Nora and MacKenna. He was preceded in death by his wife: Anna and his parents: Martin & Marie; brothers: William, Manville and Palmer Grindeland and sisters: Hazel Sathra and Irene Ogburn.
Norman had suggested memorials to the activities fund at the Luther Memorial Home and the Gran Lutheran Church cemetery fund.
