Norma Lorraine Asp

  Norma L. Asp, 88, formerly of Finley, ND, passed away on Sunday, November 5, 2023, at Luther Memorial Home in Mayville, ND. 

   She was born July 21, 1935, in Pillsbury ND, the youngest of six children born to Henry and Lorena (Griebel) Fox. She attended school in Pillsbury prior to moving with her family to South Dakota during World War II while her parents worked at the Black Hills Ordnance Depot.  

   In 1966, she married Noel Asp of Milaca, MN and moved to Finley, ND where Noel worked for the Soil Conservation Service until they both retired in 2005 and moved to Mayville, ND. While in Finley, Norma was a mother, grandmother, and homemaker. In addition to caring for her children and spending time with her grandchildren, Norma enjoyed baking and canning.  She was especially fond of making jellies from the fresh fruits and berries found around the area. She also enjoyed making special pies for different holidays and rhubarb bars during the summer. 

   In her later years, she helped her husband Noel as a survey assistant, trudging across the plains of North Dakota but always with a smile. After Noel passed in 2006, Norma enjoyed spending time at her son and daughter-in-law’s farmstead, taking care of their dogs and cats, and searching for different berries to turn into desserts. 

   After moving into Luther Memorial Home, she enjoyed interacting with both the staff and other residents, treating them all as friends and spending her time reading, listening to music, and putting together her favorite puzzles.

   Norma is survived by her son: Charles (Lasca) Asp; grandchildren: Jessica (Peter) Olmscheid, Laura Hamilton and Mark Hamilton and her great-grandchildren: Nellie Hamilton and Zayvier Olmscheid. 

   Norma was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Noel; daughter: Katherine (Asp) Hamilton and her five sisters: Vera Masden, Lucille Weil, Mildred Walters, Margaret Hull, and Marjorie Ogden.

   The family would like to thank the staff at Luther Memorial Home for the loving care they provided to Norma.  In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to Luther Memorial Home.

   A private family memorial will be held at a later date and interment will be in the Page Cemetery.
