Lyle Harry Hjelmstad, 71, of Portland, ND passed away peacefully at the Sanford Mayville Hospital surrounded by his family following a long illness.
He was born August 9, 1952 to Harry and Delores (Forseth) Hjelmstad in Northwood, ND. He grew up on the family farm at Holmes, ND. He was baptized and confirmed at Stjordalen Lutheran Church and was a lifelong member until it’s closing in 2005. He attended Union 101 country school for four years, graduated from Northwood High School in 1970 and furthered his education at Northwest Technical College. From an early age he loved horses and if there was a western show on TV, he was watching it.
Lyle was united in marriage to the love of his life Carol (Marshall) on May 1, 1971. They were blessed with three beautiful daughters. He worked in construction before starting his own business. He farmed with his Dad and continued his passion for farming by helping area farmers until his retirement. Lyle took pride in doing woodworking, building and remodeling homes.
Lyle served on several committees in the community along with being on the Northwood Deaconess Hospital & Home Board and Stjordalen Lutheran Church & Cemetery Board. He enjoyed playing softball for the Holmes softball team for many years and was also known as the Wagon Master.
His grandchildren were the light of his life. He loved going to all their sporting events, taught them how to drive and enjoyed many fishing trips with his family.
Lyle will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to share in his life.
Lyle is survived by his wife of 53 years: Carol; daughters: Shelly (David) Vollmer of Willow City ND, JoDee (Lance) Nielsen of Minot ND and Amy (Troy) Sand of Mayville ND; four grandchildren: Tucker and Ashlyn Nielsen of Minot ND, Ethan and Abby Sand of Mayville ND; two sisters: Nancy (Don) Krogstad and Cathy (Greg) Birkholz; brother-in-law: Bill (Diane) Marshall; sisters-in-law: Sherry Carroll and Wanda (Dennis) Adams; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter: Whitney Sand; mother-in-law: Mary Marshall; brother-in-law: Jerome Carroll; and a nephew: Shawn Marshall.
We would like to give a special thank you to Travis Waswick, MD for all the wonderful care he gave Lyle, the Mayville Hospital nurses and staff, Traill County Ambulance and the Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Visitation: Will be 5–7 PM on Tuesday, May 21, 2024 with a 6:30 PM Public Prayer Service at the Baker Funeral Home Chapel in Mayville, ND and will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.
Funeral Service: Will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, May 22, 2024 at the Bruflat Lutheran Church in Portland, ND.
Burial: Will be in the Stordalen~Hjelmstad Cemetery in rural Reynolds, ND.
