Joseph Herman Brown Jr.

Joseph Herman Brown, 92, passed away on May 17, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of service, strength, and devotion to his family.

Joseph was born on December 6, 1933, in Bay Shore, New York. Joe answered his country’s call at just 17 years old, enlisting in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. His military service was an important part of his life and reflected his commitment to serving his country.

After returning home, Joe began a career in law enforcement with the Suffolk County Police Department on Long Island, New York, serving as a police officer. He later continued his career in federal law enforcement, serving with the U.S. government in a law enforcement capacity before pursuing other opportunities throughout his career.

In February 1970, Joe moved to Florida. In 1978, he married his beloved wife, Ilene, a Mayville, North Dakota native. Together they shared nearly five decades of marriage, building a life centered on family. They made their home in both Mayville and Florida over the years, eventually settling in Florida, where they helped raise their great-granddaughter, Nina, who remained a cherished part of their lives. Although Florida was home for many years, Joe never lost his love for Mayville, and it was his wish to be laid to rest there.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph H Brown Sr, and Margaret Ragan; his siblings, Ruthie, Lil, Viola, Geraldine, Margie, and Charlie; his son, Michael Brown; and his infant daughters, Joyce and Janet.

He is survived by his wife, Ilene Brown; his children, Laura Qualantone, Kenneth (Diana) Brown, Heath Brown, and Tammy (Jeff Kriel) Olson; his grandchildren, Chris Mills, Eric (Tiffany) Mills, Joseph M. Brown, Scott Brown, Emilie (Matt) Bahr, Adam (Rheanna) Olson, and Alaina (Cameron) Brevik; and his cherished great-grandchildren, Nina Brown, Deja, and Neveah Brown; Kaedan, Sebastian, Jazzlyn, and Lila Mills; Aaron, Cassidy, Ryan, Zach, and Natalie Bahr; and Ellory and Emmi Olson.

Joe will be remembered for his dedication to his country, his service to his community, his strength through life’s challenges, and the love he showed to his family. His legacy lives on through the generations of people who knew him as a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, pop-pop and friend.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Visitation: Will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

Memorial Service: 2:00 PM Sunday, August 16, 2026 at the Gran Lutheran Church in rural Mayville, ND.

Burial: Will be in the Gran Cemetery in rural Mayville, ND.
