James K. Flaten, 94, of Mayville, ND died on October 23, 2019 at the Luther Memorial Home in Mayville, ND.
James Kermit Flaten was born January 19, 1925 to Olaf & Inga (Holm) Flaten in rural Viking Township Portland ND where he grew up and attended school through 8th grade. He was confirmed at Little Forks Church and later a member of Perry Lutheran Church and Aurdal Lutheran Church. He held many offices on Church and Cemetery Boards. He was a member of the American Legion and active at the Portland Senior Center.
James joined the Army Air Corp. He was stationed at Fort Snelling and for awhile in Japan after the bombings and was discharged at Camp Stoneman in California.
He married Alvia Olson November 19, 1949 in Crookston MN. They lived in Aneta, Haugen Farm in Steel County and Portland North Dakota. James worked as a farmer for the Haugen’s until he retired. For his enjoyment, he played his harmonica with the Happy Norwegian Band and the Hayshakers. He loved to do wood working and making wood products for children, his grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He hunted and fished and was an avid bird watcher and could identify and make many bird calls.
James is survived by his wife of almost 70 years: Alvia; daughter: Karen (Doug) Osland, Mayville; sons: Steven (Deb) Flaten, Grand Forks and Terry Flaten, Hiawatha, IA; sister: Inez Hanson and brother: Olaf (Ruth) Flaten; grandchildren: Kent Osland, Eric (Lisa) Osland, Anita (Andy) Strand, Stephanie (Scott) Solway, Sarah Flaten, Cindy Flaten and Rachel (Matthew) Meyer; great grandchildren: Hannah, Carter, Isabelle, Kyle, Trevor, Connor, MeKayl, Shania, Leecia, Izaiah, Andrew and Charlotte. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Cliff, Arthur, Glen and Mardell; sisters: Ruth Pladson, Florence Brenden, Claudine LaChapelle, Marion Flaten, Ione Kloster and Donna Walstad.
Family wishes memorials to Hospice of the Red River Valley and Aurdal Church.
Visitation: Will be 2–4 PM with a 4 PM Public Prayer Service on Sunday, October 27, 2019 at the Luther Memorial Home Chapel in Mayville, ND and will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.
Military Honors: May~Port Honor Guard and the ND Military Funeral Honors.
Funeral Service: 11:00 AM Monday, October 28, 2019 at the Aurdal Lutheran Church in Portland, ND.
Burial: Will be in the Aurdal Cemetery in Portland, ND.
