Gary M. Amb

    Gary Amb was born on Saturday, May 29, 1948 in Northwood, North Dakota, to Ingolf and Eileen Amb.  Gary grew up on the farm in rural Portland, and learned the art of farming from his dad. He graduated from Portland High School in 1966, and studied welding and machine work at ND State school of Science in Wahpeton.  

   In July of 1968, he married Sharon Bahl. Together they raised three children. Gary farmed in the Portland area with his dad and brothers until he retired in 2018

   Gary served on the board of the Portland rural fire department and the Portland Junction elevator. He especially enjoyed hunting, fishing, listening to country music, going to the casino, and watching all the events of his grandchildren of whom he adored. He loved working around the house and had recently restored a number of trails in the woods so he could easily visit the river he loved. 

   He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years: Sharon of Hatton, ND; their children: Nick (Lisa) Amb of Walhalla, ND, Jennifer (Jeff) Hogenson of Neenah, WI and Jessica (Steven) Williams of Grand Forks, ND; 11 grandchildren: Scott, Kelli, Bennett Amb, Trevor and Mackenzie Hogenson and Hamilton (Kaylynn), Carson (fiancée-Cassidy Sarff), Braydon, Mason, Sophie and Jaxon Williams of Grand Forks. He is also survived by his mother: Eileen Amb of Mayville; brothers: Martin (Jill Anderson) of Portland and Mark (Mary Jo) of Portland; sisters: Loretta Seaver of Climax MN, Shirley (Leon) of Clifford and Susan (Kevin) Hohnadel of Portland and numerous nieces and nephews.

   Gary was preceded in death by his father: Ingolf; a brother-in-law: Robert Seaver and a sister-in-law: Marlene Willeson.

   Gary Amb passed into eternal life on July 25, 2023 at the age of 75 years, one month, and 26 days.  May the memory of Gary be forever blessed, and the legacy of love and faithfulness he built live on through those he loved and raised.  

Visitation:  Will be on Monday, July 31, 2023 one hour prior to the service at the church.

Memorial Service: Will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, July 31, 2023 at the Aurdal Lutheran Church in Portland, ND.

Burial: Will be in the Aurdal Cemetery in Portland, ND.
