Daniel James Warner

Daniel James Warner, 79, of Mayville, ND, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 10, 2026, at Bethany Retirement Home on University in Fargo, ND, with his family by his side. After a long journey, he is now at peace and free from pain and suffering.

Daniel was born on November 18, 1946, in Bagley, MN, to James and Lillian (Gillespie) Warner. His family lived for a time in Park River before moving to Hatton in 1950, where Dan grew up and graduated from Hatton High School in 1965. He continued his education at Mayville State and Aaker’s Business College.

In 1967, Dan entered the Navy Reserve and served in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969 aboard a River Patrol Boat. His service as a veteran remained an important part of his life, and he especially enjoyed and appreciated his Honor Flight to Washington, DC, accompanied by his daughter, Dawn, in the fall of 2024.

On November 24, 1967, Dan married his high school sweetheart, D’Anne Olson, at Little Forks Lutheran Church. Together, they built a loving family and raised three children: daughters Darcy (John) Sandvig of Arizona and Dawn (Jason) Huard of Mayville, and son Darian of Florida.

After returning from Vietnam, Dan earned an associate degree in Wahpeton and worked in Casselton before returning to the Portland area. He worked in Civil Service at Grand Forks Air Force Base from 1973 until his retirement in 1998. Following retirement, he continued working part time at Mayville Motor and Bonita’s Pizza.

Dan was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hatton. Following his marriage, he became an active member of Little Forks Lutheran Church, where he served as president and held many other offices until the church closed. He then became a member of Bruflat Lutheran Church in Portland.

Family was at the center of Dan’s life. He cherished attending his children’s and grandchildren’s school activities and sporting events and enjoyed family outings, traveling and trips to the casino. He also loved fishing, camping and the time spent outdoors with family and friends. Above all, Dan will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.

Dan is survived by his wife, D’Anne; his three children, Darcy (John) Sandvig of Arizona, Dawn (Jason) Huard of Mayville, and Darian of Florida; grandchildren Riley Sandvig, Jayden (Richard) Wilson, Dylan Huard, and Broden Huard; step-granddaughter Brooke Sandvig; great-grandson Ricky Wilson; twin brother Dean (Carol) Warner of Appleton, MN; foster sister Lorraine (Scott) Ness; brother-in-law Dan Olson of Hatton; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Lillian Warner; sister Mary Olson; niece Anngee Rutland; several cousins; and his in-laws, Andrew and Inez Olson.

Dan’s life was marked by his devotion to his family, his commitment to his country, his service to his community and church, and the many relationships he built throughout his life. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
