Dale P. Bakkum

May 6, 1933 — February 19, 2020

   Dale Peder Bakkum, age 86, Mayville ND passed away on February 19, 2020.

   He was born on May 6th, 1933 in Norway Township rural North Dakota to Peder and Gelina Bakkum. He attended Norway Township 3 Country School and graduated from Mayville High School.

Dale joined the Army and earned the rank of sergeant while serving in Orleans, France during the years 1956-1958. He continued to be a member of the ND Army National Guard until 1962.

   In 1961 Dale and Nora (Severson) were married at Sarnia United Lutheran Church in Whitman, ND and made their home in rural Mayville, ND where they raised four children, Douglas, Diane, Darla, and Dean. As a family they enjoyed skiing, snowmobiling, roller skating, and many school music and sporting events.

   Professionally, Dale wore many hats. He was a farmer, contractor, and talented woodworker who was able to create, duplicate, and repair most anything. Dale also volunteered his service to the ND Game and Fish Department Hunter Safety Education program for over 30 years. In 2011 he received a life time Hunting and Fishing License for his years of service. In 1993 Dale proudly joined the Portland ND American Legion and was a member of the Honor and Color Guard. During retirement he spent many enjoyable hours sipping coffee at the café; putting puzzles together; enjoying his grandchildren’s music events, Lindaas barn dances, and camping with Nora and friends at the annual Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion.

   Dale is survived by his wife Nora of 58 years; children, Douglas (Kris) Bakkum, Diane (Bruce) Magidson, Darla (Rodney) Schmitz, and Dean (Annette) Bakkum; grandchildren, Tracy (Ethan) Ketelsen, Amy Bakkum, Natalie Schmitz, Daniel Bakkum and Allen Bakkum; great grandson, Theodore Ketelsen; sister, Jean Walstad, and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

   Dale was preceded in death by his parents Peder and Gelina Bakkum and brother Earle Bakkum.

Visitation: Will be 2–4 PM with a 4 PM Public Prayer Service on Sunday, February 23, 2020 at the Baker Funeral Home Chapel in Mayville, ND and will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

Funeral Service: 11:00 AM Monday, February 24, 2020 at the Mayville Lutheran Church in Mayville, ND.

Military Honors: May~Port Honor Guard and the North Dakota Military Funeral Honors.

Burial: Will be in the Aal Cemetery in rural Mayville, ND.
