Carol Judith Hegstad was born December 23, 1942, to Bjarne and Mabel Hegstad in rural Morgan Township, north of Mayville, North Dakota. She passed peacefully, surrounded by family, to join her husband Wayne, on June 20, 2026—two days after what would have been their 65th wedding anniversary.
Carol was the middle child between her siblings Joe, Brenda, and Ardis—and she was a force from the start. A disciplined, hard worker and natural competitor who once outran every boy in her school, Carol never quite let her grandchildren forget it. She was very adamant that they got their athletic abilities from her.
In high school, she played trombone, sang in the choir, and did tumbling at basketball games. During her sophomore year, Wayne Domier put his coat around her as she shivered in her band uniform during a football game. They were married several years later on June 18, 1961—so many people attended that some had to stand outside during the service.
Together, Carol and Wayne built a life and a family—Lowell, Brad, and Stephanie—grounded in faith, discipline, hard work, and a lot of laughter. Carol and Wayne danced, went bowling, traveled, and spent summers at Golden Lake doing lake life. Carol was the backbone of it all: steady when others weren’t, strong when it was hard, loving, compassionate, observing, and unfailingly herself. She was confirmed and married at Stjordalen Lutheran Church, which she spoke of fondly her whole life, and later became an active member of Aurdal Lutheran. She had a deep faith that was never far from the surface. She had a way of asking if you’d been to church lately that somehow made you feel like you should go.
Carol attended a business program at Mayville State University and, after graduating, built a career in accounting, working at Mayville State University, Traill County Rural Water, and Goose River Dental. She was active in her community for decades—as an FBLA advisor, as Aurdal Sunday school superintendent, and as a board member of Luther Memorial Home.
Being a grandma was one of Carol’s greatest joys! In return, her grandchildren looked up to her greatly. Carol enjoyed telling them stories from when she was young, never let them forget how to spell the word “kind”, often told them “Oh, I’m not fussy,” which served as her reminder to them that life is too short to dwell on the little things. She took pride in hosting the family holidays, setting the table a week in advance – with the plates, glasses, napkins, and silverware perfectly placed. She had an eye for decorating, always making her home feel cozy and welcoming. She made sure her grandchildren shared in her love of music. The Domier Family Christmas “programs” were legendary, with Grandma Carol reading her hand-selected books to end the evening. She also threw together the most delicious hotdish with the most random pantry ingredients, always making sure to leave enough room for a cookie…or two. Carol was ever steady—fair, resilient, loving, deeply devoted, and full of pride for her family. In her last years, she found immense entertainment in her great-granddaughter Emma.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Bjarne and Mabel Hegstad; her husband, Wayne, siblings Joe Hegstad and Brenda Enger and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. She is survived by her sister Ardis (Don) Zimney, sister-in-law Jackie Hegstad, brother-in-law Dennis (Paulette) Domier; her children Lowell (Deb) Domier, Brad (Stephanie) Domier, and Stephanie (Greg) Hammes; seven grandchildren Eric (Erica) Domier, Ellie (Riley) Grow, Chase Domier, Addison Hammes, Brady Domier, Olivia Hammes, and Jenna Domier; and great-granddaughter Emma Domier.
