Bernold A. Olson

July 25, 1940 — August 25, 2019

   Bernold Alvin Olson was born July 25, 1940 to Victor Alvin and Beatrice Corrine (Finstrom) Olson in Mayville, ND.  As an infant he was baptized into the Christian faith at Mayville Lutheran Church and as a youth completed catechesis instruction. He passed to his heavenly glory at Bethany Retirement Living on University in Fargo under Ethos Hospice Care on August 25, 2019 the result of complications of Alzheimer’s Disease.

   Bernold spent his educational years in Mayville graduating in the Mayville High School Class of 1959. He attended Mayville State Teacher’s College completing a Bachelor of Science Degree with majors in math and business.  Bernold trained in the United States Air Force and served for many years in the North Dakota Air National Guard.

   Bernold taught math and business at Thompson, ND and was called out of retirement several times.  He was an assistant football coach and active in all sports programs.  He was honored by being inducted into the Thompson High School Hall of Fame.

   When not teaching, Bern spent time fighting forest fires in Idaho, driving beet truck, he spent many hours in an airplane crop mapping Grand Forks County for the ASCS office. His hobbies included gardening, flowers (especially African Violets), fishing, camping and of course his beloved dogs.  Bernold was also an intricate part of the Thompson Volunteer Fire Department, served as an EMT, and the Thompson American Legion. 

   Bernold was a long-time resident of Thompson, ND prior to entering Bethany Retirement Living on University in Fargo in 2018.

   He was preceded in death by his parents, Victor Olson, Beatrice Olson Higdem, and stepfather Irvin Higdem.

   Survivors who will miss him for his patient, kind, loving spirit are:  Brother Truman (Peggy Sheldon) Olson, Fargo, ND; sisters Gloria (James) Husarik, Lake Park, MN and Audrey (Patrick) O’Brien, Oakes, ND along with nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. 

   In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorial donations be made to the Thompson American Legion, Post 181 (c/o Joe Simon, PO Box 303, Thompson, ND 58278) or a charity of your choice. 

Visitation:  A coffee/cookie reception/visitation with the family will take place for one hour prior to the service at the chapel.

Funeral Service: 2:00 PM Friday, August 30, 2019 at the Baker Funeral Home in Mayville, ND.

Military Honors: Thompson American Legion Post 181 and the North Dakota Military Funeral Honors.

Burial: Will be in the Mayville Cemetery in Mayville, ND.
