Sherman Thykeson

Sherman Thykeson, 78, of Portland, ND died on Saturday, August 5, 2017 at the Sanford Palliative Care Center in Fargo, ND. Sherman Thyke Thykeson was born January 27, 1939 to Otto and Nina Thykeson in Mayville, ND and grew up on a farm in rural Portland where he attended school and graduated from Portland High School. He married Gloria Beck Hallingstad on October 24, 1970 at Perry Lutheran Church. Sherman farmed for many years before he began building custom cabinets and furniture. They moved into town in 2011. Sherman worked for a rental management company, doing repairs and lawn service. Sherman served on many committees at Bang Lutheran Church and Steele County. He was a county commissioner for several years. Sherman enjoyed gardening, helping people and making flatbread. His grandchildren loved spending time on the farm when they were young where he would give them rides on his three-wheeler and make wood projects for them. Survivors include his wife Gloria, stepchildren Mike Hallingstad of Sharon, Kathryn (Neil) Lerfald of Portland; 7 grandchildren: Jill (Justin) Muth, Rachel (Sean) Stephens, Caitlin (Casey) Van Winkle, Pamela (Nick) Davis, Sally Hallingstad, Peter Hallingstad, Sarah Hallingstad; 12 great grandchildren; brother Orville (Kay) Thykeson, twin sister Shirley Olson, sister-law Emma Thykeson, many nephews and nieces and his dog, Lucy. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother: Dennis; and brother-in-law: Carl Olson. The family requests in lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of choice. Visitation: Will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Funeral Service: 10:30 AM Saturday, August 12, 2017 at the Bang Lutheran Church in Portland, ND. Burial: Will be at the Bang Cemetery in Portland, ND.
