Michael Irwin Balstad Sr.

Michael Irwin Balstad, 66, of Reno, NV, died Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at rural Portland, ND. Michael was born March 5, 1943 in Glendale, CA to Marvin and Irene (Thykeson) Balstad. He grew up in Mayville, ND, graduating from Mayville High School in 1961. In the early 1960’s, Michael moved to CA where he worked for the railroad before joining the National Guard. In 1966 he married Sandra Wilberg in California and together they had 3 children. In 1982 he married Bonnie Evanson in Reno, NV. They resided in Reno where Michael worked as a machinist making jet engine parts. Earlier this year he retired. Michael enjoyed riding his Harley and had a love for sailing. He always dreamed big and enjoyed making plans. He may not have lived in North Dakota, but his roots were always here. Several years ago, he and Bonnie purchased the Finstad Farm, rural Portland. The farm was his joy and he loved going there when he was back visiting family and friends. Michael is survived by his three children, Michael (Sandra) Balstad Jr., Brenda Balstad, and Kristine (Micah) Lacy, all of Sacramento, CA; 2 step-children, Shelli (Andy) Flanagan of Chicago, IL, and Jennifer Potter of Reno, NV; 8 grandchildren; 2 brothers, Richard (Ruth) Balstad of TX, and Steven (Sandra) Balstad of Fargo, ND; his best friend, Bonnie Balstad of Reno, NV; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, and an infant brother. Memorial Gathering: Saturday, June 27, 2009 from 2-4 PM at Baker Funeral Home, Mayville, ND.
