Donald Cannon, 86, of Mayville, ND died Friday, June 3, 2016 at his residence in Mayville. Donald was born Oct. 9, 1929 in Cherokee, IA. He was baptized and confirmed at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee, IA. He graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in 1948. He then attended Creighton University and received a Bachelor of Science in history, chemistry and education. He then entered the US Army receiving the rank of Lieutenant and eventually moving into the MASH unit as a medic during the Korean War. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with three bronze stars. Don married after his honorable discharge from the Army. This marriage produced four boys: Thomas (Caren), Patrick (Kelly), Michael (Becky) and Christopher (Ann). Don is survived by his children, seven grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Don was a high school principal, became a professor at Creighton, received his PhD. in education at the University of Michigan, he then became Vice President of the Education College at Canisius in Buffalo, N.Y. and then Chairman of the Northern Plains Consortium of N.D. writing grants for six colleges. Don was an ardent Twins fan, Vikings fan and college sports fan. He enjoyed playing the stock market, pool, bridge, pinochle, his lake home, travel and spending time with his loved ones. He is preceded in death by his brother: Richard and his wife, Donna; his father John Cannon and mother Marie Cannon and the mother of his sons, Vera Nell Cannon. He is also preceded in death by the love of his life, Claudia Hastings. Visitation: Will be one hour prior to the service at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church. Memorial Service: 11:00 AM Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Mayville, ND. Military Honors: May~Port Honor Guard and the North Dakota Military Funeral Honors. Burial: Will be at a later date in Cherokee, Iowa.
