Oscar Phillip Eide Jr

Oscar Phillip Eide, Jr.,74, of Mayville, formerly of Portland, died Saturday, January 31, 2009, at the Luther Memorial Home in Mayville. He was born June 18, 1934, on the family farm near Portland, the son of Oscar Sr. and Bertha (Anderson) Eide. Oscar was baptized and confirmed at Perry Lutheran Church, Portland. Oscar graduated from Portland High School in 1952 and worked on the family farm. Oscar enlisted in the US Navy, working aviation duty at Moffett Field, CA from 1955-1957 and was in the Naval Reserve through 1961 when he was Honorably Discharged. On December 26, 1959, Oscar married Thelma Arlene Halstensgard at Gary Lutheran Church in Gary, MN. He returned to Mayville and worked for Kurda Mills and from 1962 to 1993 he worked on the family farm. After semi-retiring the couple moved to Mayville and have resided there since. Oscar was an active lifetime member of Perry Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Anderson-Hefta American Legion of Portland for over 50 years and was on the Primrose Township Board for many years. He will be remembered for his friendly nature and contagious laugh. He was devoted to his family and farming. Oscar is survived by his wife of 49 years, Thelma Eide of Mayville; 5 children, Dawn (Robert) Thuen of Bismarck, ND, Randall (Brenda) Eide of Portland, Robyn (Ethan) Grindeland of Hatton, ND, Laurie Eide of Aurora, CO, and Susan (Charl) Niska of Alexandria, MN; 6 grandchildren, Sarah Thuen, Evan and Austin Eide, Amber Grindeland, and Paige and Jaclyn Niska; sister, Juanne Reichert of Crookston, MN; brother, John (Luretta) Eide of Palm Desert CA; sisters-in-law, Jeanette Eide and Ardis Hagland; and 4 nieces and 2 nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Alden and Allen, sister Donna Johnstone, nephew Scott Johnstone, and brothers-in-law Garfield Reichert and Harry Johnstone. Memorials preferred to the charity of your choice. Visitation: Wednesday February, 4 from 5-7:30 PM with a prayer service at 7:30, at Baker Funeral Home in Mayville, and will resume one hour prior to the funeral service at the church. Funeral Service: Thursday February, 5 at 2:00 PM at Perry Lutheran Church, rural Portland. Burial: Perry Lutheran Church Cemetery.
