Harry Smith

Harry (Harold) E. Smith, 45, of Portland, ND died on Saturday, May 23, 2015. Harry was born on November 15, 1969 in Phoenix, AZ to Roger and Judy (Ihnken) Smith. He attended May~Port schools and later MSU in Mayville, ND and UND in Grand Forks, ND. During his high school years, Harry worked for Kris Moen doing cement work. On June 8, 1991, he married Karen Jacobson at the Ostervold Lutheran Church in Finley, ND. From 1992 to present, he worked for Farmers Union Oil. Harry was often heard saying “His girls were the love of his life.” He was known for great big bear hugs and he had a talent for song writing and playing the guitar. He also like playing video games and ran several 5K marathons. Harry is survived by his wife of 23 years: Karen; a daughter: Kasie both of Portland; parents: Roger and Judy Smith of Casa Grande, AZ; brothers: Randy (Tina) Smith of Maple Grove, MN and Blake (Shannon) Smith of Cody, WY; mother-in-law: Shirley Jacobson of Finley; brother-in-law: Kelly (Gina) Jacobson of Finley; sister-in-law: Kathleen (Steve) Argall of Thompson, ND; 6 aunts and uncles; numerous nieces and nephews; 2 great nephews and 2 great nieces. He is also survived by a young man who Harry loved like a son and mentored: Draven Turpin of Portland. He is preceded in death by his grandparents: Vern and Alvina Smith and also Harry and Delena (Hensted) Ihnken; and a father-in-law: Orville Jacobson. A celebration of Harry’s life will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at the Centennial Park in Portland, ND.
