Vernon "Papa Tiny" Kaldor

June 20, 1918 — January 12, 2015

Vernon Kaldor, called “Papa Tiny” by many passed away on Monday January 12, 2015 at the Luther Memorial Home in Mayville, ND at the age of 96 years. Vernon Kaldor was born the son of Enoch and Marie Kaldor, born June 20, 1918. He was a lifelong member of Aal Lutheran Church, rural Hillsboro until the Aal Church closed. He joined Mohawk Valley Community Church, Wellton Arizona. Vernon served in the US Army during WWII in the south Pacific, being stationed in the Philippine Islands, Biac, Australia and Japan. Vernon was united in marriage to Clara Lien Kompelien on March 20, 1952. They farmed the family farm at Hillsboro. He milked guernsey cows which was bottled as grade A “Golden Guernsey Milk” until he lost his arm in a combine accident in fall of 1969. He served on the Traill County Water Board, LMH Board of Directors and was Treasurer of Aal Lutheran Church for many years. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, and designing and building many items as gifts. He loved to play all games and was a tough Pinochle player. He played many games of Aggravation with his great-grandchildren and always took time for them. Papa Tiny spent over 20 years of being a “snowbird”, wintering near Yuma, AZ where he made the desert bloom, especially his beautiful roses. He is survived by a daughter JoAnn (Gary) McClenahen, Hillsboro, ND, a son Robert (Sharon) Kaldor of Everett, WA, a sister Grace Lien of Mayville, ND, sister-in-law Alma Sheane of Mahtomedi, MN, 9 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife Clara, brother Maynard, brother-in-laws James Lien, Selmer Lien, Norval Lien, Arthur Lien, Earl Kelly and Ken Sheane. Family wishes memorials be given to Hospice of the Red River Valley. Visitation: Will be 5–7:00 PM with a 7 PM Public Prayer Service on Thursday, January 22, 2015 at the Baker Funeral Home Chapel and will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorial Service: 10:30 AM Friday, January 23, 2015 at Valley Free Lutheran Church in Portland, ND. Military Honors: May~Port Honor Guard and the ND Military Funeral Honors Burial: Will be at 1:00 PM on Friday at Aal Cemetery, Hillsboro, ND.
