February 15, 1923 — July 10, 2008

Edson Germain Larson, 85, of Mayville, ND, died Thursday, July 10, 2008, at the Luther Memorial Home in Mayville. Edson was born February 15, 1923 at Aneta, ND to Enoch Germain and Julia (Lee) Larson. The family later lived in Bismarck and Valley City. A 1940 graduate of Valley City High School, Edson enlisted in the Army in 1942. On Christmas Day 1944 he landed in Marseille, France as part of the 70th Infantry Division which days later faced the last German offensive at Wingen, France. Few of Edson’s unit survived the attack, the cold, and the snow. Edson narrowly missed German bullets several times but was wounded in action February 1945. He returned to the fighting and in 86 consecutive days of combat, the 70th liberated 58 towns and drove deep into Germany. After the war, Edson earned a degree from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. After college he farmed with his family near Mayville. Edson married Margaret Brunsdale in October 1955 at the Governor’s Residence in Bismarck when her father was governor. The couple made their home in Mayville and Edson continued farming. Edson had many interests and an active mind. He and Margaret traveled and kept in touch with business associates and army comrades. His interest in public affairs let him to serve on the Mayville City Council for 4 years. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge. He considered himself a steward of the property that came into his possession and he enjoyed being “hands on” in his management, even attending corporate shareholder’s meetings usually ignored by most investors. He loved to talk with people and could find something in common with corporate executives or the waitress at the diner. Edson is survived by his wife of 52 years, Margaret; his sister Elaine Kievman of Lost Angeles, CA; his brother, Frank (Jo Andrea) of Valley City, ND; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Enoch and Julia; his brother Bob; and his sister Carol Jean Carlisle. His family and friends appreciate the loving care Edson received from Hospice of the Red River Valley.
