Joyce O. Hanson

January 10, 1929 — November 12, 2013

Joyce Olivia Hanson, 84, of Mayville, ND, died Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at Luther Memorial Home in Mayville. She was born on January 10, 1929 to Albert and Helma (Heskin) Klath on the Klath family farm located in Steele County, West of Portland, ND. Joyce was a busy child and at a very young age she and her younger brother, Orien were sent to country school with their two older sisters, Eleanor and Agnes. It was nice for “MA” not so for the teacher as Joyce had a great hit playing softball, threw her softball bat and broke her teacher’s nose. She graduated from Portland High School, she was a Pirate. After graduation she studied cosmetology and graduated from New York Hairstyling Academy in Fargo, ND. After completing her cosmetology training she began college at Mayville State Teacher’s College pursuing a degree in Music. Her studies were stopped abruptly with the sudden death of her Father. She moved to the family farm for a time to help her mother and then began her career as a hairstylist. On February 25, 1951, Joyce was united in marriage to Lloyd Hanson. Joyce and Lloyd raised one daughter. They lived in Hatton for a few years and later moved to Mayville where she was employed at Brown’s Beauty Shop. For 56 years she worked in her trade of hairstyling. She owned and operated Joyce’s Beauty Salon for most of that time as she was a take charge kind of woman. Joyce was involved with her church, she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir and was an active member of Mary Circle. She enjoyed hosting the Circle Christmas meetings as the Christmas season was her favorite time of year. She was a baker and enjoyed baking for the holidays. Joyce enjoyed golfing on the old “sand” greens known as the Lindaas Pasture, taking time from work to play bridge, family vacations, fishing outings with the Kuhle family and later spending time with her two granddaughters. She retired in December of 2008 and in January 2009 moved into Luther Memorial Home in time to celebrate her 80th birthday. Two years later she was transferred to Meadow Lark, the Alhzeimer’s Unit, in Luther Memorial Home. Joyce is survived by her daughter, Jackie (Stephen) Kuhle, Mayville, ND. Two granddaughters, Jennifer Kuhle-Parker(Joseph, Jr.), Louisville, Kentucky and Kimberly Kuhle, Grand Forks, ND, and Great grandchildren, Hayden and Eli Parker. Her brother Orien(Elaine) Klath, Portland and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Lloyd, sisters Eleanor Leland and Agnes Johnson. Visitation: Will be on Saturday, December 21, 2013 from 5 – 7 PM with a 7 PM Public Prayer Service at the Luther Memorial Home Chapel and will resume one hour prior to the service at the Church. Funeral Service: 2:00 PM Sunday, December 22, 2013 at Mayville Lutheran Church in Mayville, ND. Burial: Mayville Cemetery, Mayville, ND.
