Ernest Hettervig, 90, of Mayville, ND, formerly of Buxton, ND died Tuesday, November 5, 2013, surrounded by his family at the Luther Memorial Home in Mayville, ND. He was born on March 19, 1923 in Bingham Township, rural Buxton, ND the son of Ellie and Emma (Bureson) Hettervig. He attended country school at Belmont #5 and after his schooling; he worked with his family on the farm. On June 26, 1951, he married Barbara Baxter at the United Parish Church in Hillsboro, ND. The couple resided on the Hettervig farm and continued to farm and ranch until 1985. Even after his retirement, Ernie was always willing to help his son, Martin. The couple moved into Mayville in 2009. Ernie was a member of the Highland Lutheran Church and served on the Cemetery board and Church Council. He was active in the Sons of Norway and the Belmont Township board. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and was a very good dancer, who would go, almost every Sunday evening, to dance at the American Legion in East Grand Forks. Over the years, he acquired an extensive pen collection. Ernie was well known at the Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion in Rollag, MN and often would display his John Deere “D” tractor, plow and corn binder. He is survived by his wife: Barbara of Mayville; three daughters: Joyce, (Daryl) Gilbertson of Climax, MN, Emogean (Terrence) Sundeen of Green River, WY and Nancy (Allan) Allrich of Halstad, MN; one son: Martin of Buxton; five grandchildren: Joshua Gilbertson, Benjamin Allrich, Trent Sundeen, Christopher Hettervig and Casey Hettervig; two great-grandchildren: Parker and Kenleigh Allrich; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and a special cousin: Arlen Hettervig. Visitation: 5-7 PM with a 7 PM Prayer Service on Sunday, November 10, 2013 at the Luther Memorial Home in Mayville and will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.
