Reuben Sylvester Braaten, 85 died on September 1, 2013 surrounded by his family at Sanford Hospital in Mayville. Reuben was born to Elmer & Malla (Huus) Braaten on August 29, 1928 in Hatton North Dakota where he attended school graduating from Hatton High School. On October 29, 1948 Reuben married Frances Bye in Hatton, ND. Reuben farmed for one year then moved to Mayville where he worked in the elevator business; in 1962 he became part owner of the Mayville Elevator until it was sold in 1977 after which he continued to work at the elevator until his retirement in 1985. Reuben was a quiet, patient man who enjoyed spending time with his family, whether it was at Lake Melissa during the summer, Mesa in the winter or at home in Mayville. He was an avid golfer, recording three hole-in-ones within a 19 day period in 1995 for which he received recognition in Sports Illustrated. Reuben was also a member of Mayville Lutheran Church. Reuben is survived by his wife, 3 children Carol (Robert) Hyland of Fond du Lac WI, Steve (Rebecca) Braaten of Portland ND, Neil (Tracy) Braaten of Mayville ND. 8 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren, Jesse (Pat) Moore and their children, Maggie, Sean and Molly of Mesa AZ, Rob (Nancy) Hyland and their children, Peyton, Isaac and Brody of Fond du Lac WI, Josh (Jerilyn) Braaten and their children Jordan and Jackson of Portland ND, Molly (Jeremy) Johnson and their children Hayle, Mikayla and Emma of West Fargo ND, JoDee Braaten and her son Trystan of Mesa AZ, Cassie (Jerry) Olson of Mayville ND; Mandy (Erik) Nelson and their son Eli of Fargo ND, Ben (Nicole) Braaten, Fargo ND. He is also survived by his brother Ronald (Edie) Braaten of West Fargo ND and sister-in-laws Ruby Bye and Donna Bye of Hatton ND, Delores (Bob) Kringlen, Grand Forks ND and brother-in-law Orvis (Marilyn) Bye, Hatton, ND and numerous nieces and nephews. Reuben was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Ardell and Eugene, sister Gladys Aasen and infant sister Delores. Visitation: 5-7 PM on Sunday, September 8, 2013 with a prayer service at 6:30 PM at Baker Funeral Home Chapel and will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Funeral Service: 2:00 PM Monday, September 9, 2013 at Mayville Lutheran Church, Mayville, ND. Burial: Mayville Cemetery, Mayville, ND.
