Jonathon "Jack" Short

March 31, 1949 — January 16, 2008

Jonathon “Jack” Short, 58, of Portland, N.D., died at home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley, Wednesday, January 16, 2008, after a courageous battle with cancer. Jack was born March 31, 1949, in Valley City, N.D., to Rutherford and Deana (Vining) Short. He grew up on a farm near McHenry, N.D., with 11 siblings. After graduating from McHenry High School in 1967, he attended Valley City State University for a short time and served in the US Army from 1969-1971. He married Linda Frappier on April 22, 1972, and they raised three children on a farm near McHenry. Jack worked for Melroe for several years, and then worked for Anderson Sand and Gravel. In 1991, Jack and Linda moved to a small farmstead near Portland, N.D., where Jack worked in road construction and as a welder. Jack enjoyed his garden, his horses, and most of all, his beloved family. He is survived by his wife, Linda; two daughters, Patti Short of Moorhead, M.N. and Jenni (Matt) Thompson of Fargo; one son, Cole (Alyssa) Short of Fargo. He is also survived by three brothers, Terry (Shirley) Short of Cooperstown, Dave Short of McHenry and Tim (Janet) Short of McHenry; five sisters, Maxine (Larry) Olson of Pelican Rapids, M.N., Ruth Zidon of Glyndon, M.N., Roberta (Jim) Williams of New Rockford, Linda (Arlen) Somerville of Minnewauken and Judy (Glenn) Cudworth of New Rockford, and two sisters-in-law, Lois Short and Darlis Short. Jack was preceded in death by his parents and by four brothers, Kendall, Doug, Brian and Melvin in infancy. Thank you to the cancer team at Altru Cancer Center in Grand Forks who took such good care of Jack the last couple years. Thank you, too, to the chemo nurses who became such a special part of his life and to all of Jack’s extended family and friends who gave so much help and support during his illness. FUNERAL SERVICE: Monday, January 21, 2008 at 1:00 PM at Mayville Lutheran Church, Mayville, ND. VISITATION: Sunday, January 20, 2008, from 1-3 PM, at Baker Funeral Home in Mayville, and one hour prior to the funeral service at the church. BURIAL: Mayville Cemetery, Mayville, ND.
