Margaret E. Moen

October 13, 1918 — April 3, 2012

Margaret (Klessig) Moen, a resident of Luther Memorial Home, Mayville, ND died the morning of April 3, 2012 at age 93. Margaret E. (Klessig) Moen was born in Quincy, FL to William and Alma (Ball) Klessig on October 13, 1918. When Margaret was a child, the Klessig family moved frequently – first to Sarasota, FL, then to Iowa, then to Worthington, MN, and finally to a northern Minnesota farm near Badger. Margaret graduated from the Worthington, MN high school about the time her parents moved to the farm near Badger. Rather than accompany her parents on their final move, Margaret came to Mayville, ND to become a student at Mayville State Normal School. Her intention was to follow in her mother’s footsteps and become a teacher. In those days, Margaret could become certified to teach after completing a two year program of study. Margaret earned her certificate and then accepted a teaching job at a rural school near Roseau, MN. During her time at Mayville State, however, she met a young farmer named Marcus Moen. In 1938, Marcus and Margaret were married and Margaret returned to the Mayville area as a farm wife. Marcus and Margaret would ultimately raise 4 children: Donald (Don), Marcia, Robert (Bob) and Mark. In the late 1940’s Marcus and Margaret left the farm and moved into the City of Mayville where Marcus managed Moen Implement Company and Moen Oil Company. Margaret was a stay-at-home mom until the children got older. Then she returned to Mayville State to earn additional credits in Library Science so she could become a librarian. Margaret served as the librarian at the Mayville Public Library for many years and subsequently served as a library assistant in the Mayville-Portland public school system. Margaret was a member of the Mayville Lutheran Church, and was active in many community organizations and activities. Among other accomplishments, she was the first woman to serve on the Mayville School Board. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Fritz, and her husband, Marcus. She is survived by a sister Betty (Bill) Nelson of Oslo, MN, her children; Don (Juneal) of Mayville, ND; Marcia Moen (Bill Barnes) of Bloomfield, CT; Bob (Tammy) of West Bend, WI; and Mark (Sonja) of Devils Lake, ND; plus 6 grand children, 4 great grand children, and numerous nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held at Baker Funeral Home, Mayville from 5-7 pm Friday, April 6th and resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorial services will be held at Mayville Lutheran Church at 10:30 am, Saturday, April 7th with burial at the Mayville Cemetery.
