Nathalie "Becky" Brustad

June 16, 1933 — February 23, 2012

Nathalie “Becky” June Brustad, 78, of Mayville, ND passed away Thursday, February 23, 2012 at Sanford Hospital in Mayville, surrounded by family and friends. Becky, as she was known to many, was born June 16, 1933, to John and Minnie (Olson) Beck in rural Portland, ND. She was baptized and confirmed at Little Forks Lutheran church in rural Hatton, ND. She attended school in rural Portland and then at Portland High School. She married George Brustad on April 18, 1957 at the First American Lutheran Church Parsonage. Becky worked at various locations throughout her life in the Mayville-Portland community with the most recent being Soholt Bakery and Luther Memorial Home. But her most important work was taking care of her family and those in need. She didn’t care if she owned many earthly possessions, for she knew in her heart, that her greatest gifts would come in heaven. She cared for the elderly, the children, and all of God’s creation, which would most certainly include dogs! There wasn’t a dog that Becky met that she didn’t love! Becky and George raised 7 children, and she loved each one unconditionally. Along the way would come many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and they too would be loved by Grandma as if they were the only grandchild she had. She also had many “adopted” children and grandchildren – those from the neighborhood and community that would come to share a meal with her and Grandpa, or watch her favorite team, the Twins, with her. She opened her small, humble home to everyone! Becky loved attending her children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events, piano recitals and musical concerts. Her and Grandpa George were even named “fans of the year” at MPCG High School one year. She was very proud of all of the accomplishments in sports, music and academics. She served her community by volunteering at church, Union Hospital, Meals on Wheels, the VFW and by being a loving friend to many. She is survived by her husband: George of Mayville; seven children: Vicki (Terry) Berg of West Fargo, ND, Peggy (Ken) Fyre of Portland, ND, Scott (Gail) Brustad of Lincoln, ND, Pamela (Tim) Armstrong of Fargo, ND, Patti (Barry) Ahl of Mankato, MN, Lisa (Marius) Rygg of Fargo, ND and Nathan (Dawn) Brustad of Denton, TX; 20 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Clara Johnson and Shirley Beck; two brothers: Carl (Darlene) Beck and Gilman (Betty) Beck. She is also survived by several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents; one sister, Blanche; eight brothers, Marvin, Tilman, Joseph, Ernest, David, Einar, Thomas and John Jr. and one great-grandson, Connor Aaron Fyre. Funeral Service: 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 27, 2012 at First American Lutheran Church, Mayville, ND. Visitation: Will be from 5–7 p.m. Sunday, February 26, 2012 with a public prayer service at 7 p.m. at Baker Funeral Home, Mayville, ND and will resume one hour prior to the funeral service on Monday. Burial: Mayville Cemetery, Mayville, ND.
