Hazel Vivian Knudson

Hazel V. Knudson, 92, long time resident of Portland, ND, died Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at Sanford Hospital in Mayville, ND. Hazel Vivian Thykeson was born February 8, 1919 in rural Portland, the daughter of Alfred and Otilla (Osmon) Thykeson. She was baptized and confirmed at Bang Lutheran Church, Portland. She attended Enger Township #4 and was a 1944 graduate of Franklin Vocational Hospital of Nursing in Minneapolis, MN. She was employed as a nurse at hospitals in Minneapolis, Hillsboro, and Mayville and as a private nurse. Hazel married Oscar B. Knudson on December 28, 1950 at the Trinity Lutheran Church parsonage in Moorhead, MN. They farmed near Portland until retiring in 1979 and continued to enjoy the farm in the summer, and the winters in town. Oscar B. died June 4, 1998. Hazel continued to live on the farm, and in town, until moving to Luther Memorial Home in October 2007. Hazel was a lifelong member of Bang Lutheran Church. She was active in WELCA, circle and ladies aid, she taught Sunday school and served as an advisor to the Luther League. Hazel is survived by her son, Orlin (Doreen) Knudson of Vadnais Heights, MN; two grandchildren, Kristin and Rachel of Vadnais Heights, MN; sisters-in-law, Ovedia Haldorson of Eau Claire, WI, and Ragna Guttormson of Portland; and many nieces, nephews and God-children. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar B., parents, and siblings, twin sister Helen, Irene (Marvin) Balstad, Eleanor (Lewis) Holkesvig, and Arthur (Hazel) Thykeson. Funeral Service: 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 26, 2011 at Bang Lutheran Church, rural Portland, ND. Visitation: 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Friday, February 25, 2011 at Luther Memorial Home, Mayville, ND, and will resume one hour prior to the funeral service, at the church. Burial: Bang Lutheran Church Cemetery.
