Carolina Osland, 99, of Mayville, ND, passed away peacefully Tuesday, February 1, 2011, at Sanford Hospital, Mayville. Carolina Johnson was born April 18, 1911, in Cole Harbor, ND, to Oscar & Mina (Nelson) Johnson. She spent much of her childhood in Hatton, ND, and graduated from high school in Zumbrota, MN. Carolina attended Mayville State University where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Education. After teaching a number of years in country schools, she married Arthur Osland on June 10, 1936. Arthur and Carolina farmed in Morgan Township until 1975 and then retired in Mayville. Carolina was involved in activities at Bethany Lutheran Church and in community activities, including the Morgan Homemakers, serving as a 4-H leader, and sharing in soil conservation activities with Arthur. She ensured the Osland Farm Homestead, which was busy all summer long, was the traveling destination for Oslands, Nelsons, and Johnsons. She enjoyed spending time with family, gardening, traveling and playing cards. She is survived by her children, Joan Graffius, Plymouth, MN; Arnold (Patricia) Osland, rural Mayville, ND; and Arlene (Court) Hanson, rural Blanchard, ND; sister Georgia Kaufman, Danville, IL; seven grandchildren Mary (Greg) Halvorson, Mark (Jody) Osland, Janet Holt, Michael (Jennifer) Osland, Kathy (Shawn) Knudson, Margretta Hanson, and Elizabeth Hanson; twelve great-grandchildren Jacob Osland, Derek Osland, Sidney Osland, Dustin Holt, Tanner Holt, Dalton Holt, Benjamin Osland, Hannah Osland, Matthew Knudson, Nickolas Knudson, Ryan Knudson and Chase Knudson; one great-great-grandchild Riley Knudson; and many nieces and nephews. Carolina was preceded in death by her parents, husband Arthur on August 15, 1996, brothers Einar and Oliver, son-in-law Gareld Kosloski, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services: 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 4, 2011, at Bethany Lutheran Church, rural Hatton, ND. Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. Prayer Service and time of sharing on Thursday, February 3, 2011, at the Luther Memorial Home Chapel, Mayville, ND, and one hour prior to the funeral service, at the church. Interment: Bethany Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Hatton, ND, in the spring. Memorials: Memorials may be given to Bethany Lutheran Church or Bethany Lutheran Church Cemetery.
